If you already own a compact or utility tractor, a PTO wood chipper is one of the most cost-effective ways to clear brush. It has no engine of its own: it runs from your tractor’s power take-off (PTO) shaft and mounts on the three-point hitch. The key is matching the chipper to your tractor.
How a PTO chipper works
The tractor’s PTO shaft spins the chipper’s rotor, and the three-point hitch carries the machine. Because there is no separate engine to maintain, PTO chippers are simpler and often less expensive than self-powered machines of similar capacity.

1. Horsepower
Every PTO chipper lists the tractor horsepower it is designed for. Stay within that range: too little power will bog down, too much can overload the driveline.
2. Three-point hitch category
Most compact and utility tractors use a Category 1 hitch. Some chippers are Category 1 with Category 2 compatibility.
3. PTO shaft and spline
Check the PTO shaft length range and spline type (6-spline is standard on most small tractors) so the driveline fits your tractor.
4. Feed system
Hydraulic feed rollers pull branches in at a controlled rate, which is easier and safer for larger material.

Only if the tractor has a rear PTO and three-point hitch and its horsepower falls inside the chipper’s listed range.
